We’ve put a lot of time and effort into this so I hope you guys find it helpful! (and if you do, please subscribe to our YouTube channel/follow us on twitter)

Damn, this was surprisingly informative! I learned a whole bunch of stuff:

    1) Breaking tackle armbar: FINALLY!!! I’ve been searching the forums and all over the place and everyone has a different or weird notation that doesn’t work, namely that 1+2,2,2,… notation. Now I know just to mash 1+2. Seriously, it was ridiculous eating the armbar everytime even though you know they’re gonna do it.

    2) Breaking side throws: I had no idea you just press the direction you are facing towards the opponent to break whatever grab they use (1+3, 2+4, or 1+2 grabs). That makes breaking sidethrows much easier since you can tell which direction your body is oriented towards the opponent and press the corresponding button (1 for your left side facing opponent, and 2 for your right side facing opponent). Although, doesn’t King have the only 3+4 throw break in the game with b1+2, 3+4?

    3) FUFT (face up feet towards) CH3: I had no idea it allows you to juggle on CH! I always wondered why sometimes I could juggle, but sometimes I couldn’t. I knew about the FDFT 3 into juggle, but this was something new.

    4) Tech roll backwards: Didn’t know you just held back to tech roll backwards immediately. I always thought you had to tap back just when you hit the ground, but this new notation makes tech rolling backwards much easier and consistent.

    5) Juggle reset: Actually I was a little confused about this. If you just lay there, you can’t be juggle reset-ed, right? It’s only if you press up to stand up or roll backwards? Or maybe also siderolls get juggle reset-ed as well? I was confused how Bruce was able to juggle reset, because I couldn’t tell what Steve was doing on the ground.

    6) Wall hits: Very nice explanation by TRUE! when he said wall hits don’t count when your opponent’s feet are touching the floor, which explains why higher wall splats enable more hits. I also didn’t know the bound move doesn’t count as a wall hit. Also is it true only 1 bound move is allowed for any juggle even with walls or floor breaks?

    7) Low wall hit: Didn’t know this up’d the scaling dmg back to 70%. I think you demonstrated this with Lars’ d/b21…it’s the 1 part that is hitting them back to the wall for the low wall hit, correct? What other characters have this kind of thing? Also, I’m not sure if you mentioned how after a wall splat (they fall face down), you can step back and say with Feng do d/f+1 for a re-wall splat. I’m not sure how the mechanics work with this type of wall combo, but it does more hits = more dmg, that’s as far as I know. Maybe you guys can explain this also?

    8) FUFT b3+4: I always thought it was bb3+4, but simply b3+4 works, right?

I explained my questions so they can help give others quick pointers to things they might now know or things that might be trickier to remember as they were for me.

I didn’t finish watching the entire series (only up to Part 4), but thanks a lot for these videos. It was very insightful.

Hey EpicPhail37 glad you’re super excited about this series, and glad you asked some questions.

Well here we go, I’m going to try and answer these questions of yours:

      1) Some argue that it’s 1+2,2,2,2 which I have had work for me in the past, but during the show I only pressed 1+2 1+2 1+2 and that worked for me. Usually that’s what I press and to get out of it, though there are some naysayers.

      2) It’s not necessarily easier, since in the heat of a match, let’s say you just tech rolled and was left at a weird angle. Looks as though you’re at a straight angle, but it turns out that the throw grabs your side, this is really tricky especially when they were on your right side and threw out a 1+3 throw and vice versa, this happens once in a while during matches so I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s easy to break sidethrows. Also sidethrows have a smaller break window than regular throws, so keep that in mind. And yeah, King’s b1+2 throw extensions are quite unique, and we’ll get to that once we cover King.

      3) Yup CH only :) .

      4) Well the term that’s widely accepted is “backroll,” not really considered a “tech” roll when they’re backrolling.

      5) Nope, if you don’t press anything in these situations to tech, you can be reset-ed even when you don’t do anything. Steve wasn’t doing anything, and that’s what happens if you A) don’t do anything, B) backroll, C) forward roll. You can’t sideroll yet either cuz you have to be on the ground for a short bit, though the reset catches you before you can even start siderolling. So the only option here is to tech roll, though this wouldn’t be useful since “why go for the juggle reset when the opponent can tech it all the time?” That’s where “tech catches” come in, which we will discuss later on in the series.

      6) Generally one B! per combo, unless like we’ve shown in this episode, you B! before the floor break area, and then spike them on the floor break area, and you’ll get a second B! on the stage below. This is the only case where you’ll get 2 B!s in a combo. Other than you can only get B!-ed again, if your opponent picks you up for a floater after a “spike.” Which isn’t a juggle reset situation either, since a spike will not allow you to tech roll, sounds confusing but it’ll be discussed more in the future.

      7) Certain strings in this game will pick up after a low wall hit, which is all dependent on that character’s move. After a “wall-stun” move, yes you can backdash then do a move that’ll resplat them onto the wall, putting them in a “wall splat” state. Like we showed with the whole “wall-stun = opponent’s falling off the wall FDFA,” while a “wall splat will make them fall down FUFT.”

As for the FUFT b3+4 question, yes you are correct. Hopefully this answers all your questions.

I love that wang move-absorb that was done, I read it in Tekken Zaibatsu post but didn’t recall how to do it. This is soo much tekken gear, which makes me soo much grateful due to you guys making my life easier. Thanks a bunch, and I’m definitly looking foward to any future videos, if any.

Good stuff all around. Good to see someone finally took the time to do this. I do think you should have mentioned the throw breaks on Giant Swing and AK/Roger DDT though. Even if you do mention it in the character specific tutorials, it’s probably better to mention it in the basics because most people that aren’t interested in those characters, probably won’t watch those videos.

Well thats pretty much how I’m looking at it. Tekken has a LOT of characters with relatively deep movelists. If you want to know how to beat a certain character, you’re going to want to watch the character analysis for that character specifically. If a year from now, youre getting hit by giant swing, you’ll guess to look in the King video, not the general introduction episode – which is why we tried to stay away from too much character specific stuff in this episode.

    Hey guys!

Great videos! Great quality of sound and picture and the text! These are IMO the best Tekken tutorial vids on the youtube right now!

Me and my girlfriend (yes world, girls play fighting games too!) play together sometimes. I am of course better than her, so I’ll have her watch these videos. Her favorite character is Lili (yeah, big surprise there!) so I’m asking you kindly to cover that characters in depth really soon.

Cred to IAMTEKKEN for this, we’re looking forward for the next ones! When are those by the way?

Incredibly informative video and explains everything a newbie needs to know very thoroughly in a very short amount of time. Bravo! I’ve played these games for a few years now and I still learned one or two new things. (like the chicken system, I saw it happen on accident once way back but couldn’t figure out how I did it so I convinced myself it didn’t happen!) I’m definitely looking forward to the character specific stuff as it will hopefully be useful to both the new and old players. My gf and a couple of my friends are trying to learn the ropes of this game and this episode will be an incredible tool in helping them. I really like the idea of bringing in a different pro player for every character and I would definitely suggest Korean players if you had a translator or they spoke english. That would be outstanding! Many of those players as you know are very popular and people would definitely learn ALOT from listening to them talk about their main in detail. Although maybe that’s more something that you would want to do on your tekken time podcast (also excellent by the way and much appreciated). Overall this was outstanding, great job.

Good stuff, but for the youtube videos, please use director’s account instead of breaking up a video into 6 parts (or at least you can break it up into 2 or 3 parts instead). Makes it easier for the viewers and you, both.

This is great, love to see more!! Especially looking forward to more advanced stuff, like tech traps.

Hey just wanted to say, amazing video. I’m so pumped for future installments and I gotta say, this vid prepped me so much and helped me just get back to basics.

Not sure if you’ve seen my noob help thread on TZ but I was really frustrated not being able to beat a friend of mine using DJ or Leo, and this video has taken away a lot of that frustration because I’ve gone back to just practicing simple things which in the long run has really improved my aggressive game. I’ve also picked up Steve recently and I’m rather confused as to how you’re supposed to play him. Most characters I’ve played you try and get a launcher in by mixing mids and highs but with Steve it’s nearly impossible for me to get a launch, and whenever I do, I’m usually deer-in-the-headlights with it. Maybe you can help me 1 on 1 lol.

Anyway, awesome video, keep up the work, can’t wait to learn some more from the pros at Level Up Your Game!

    Peace! ^_^ -zabuzafreak

Guys, shouldn’t backdash be like following?

    b,b d/b,b, d/b,b, d/b,b, …? That pretty much does it.
